About the Mapmakers
Green Maps are made by students, planners, geographers, environmentalists, city employees, tourism organizations, designers, eco-entrepreneurs, artists, teachers, and more!! These global citizens are forming unique partnerships within their communities to document and promote the local environment. Green Mapmaking can be done by people of all ages, and projects are sometimes intergenerational collaborations, where young people and seniors work side by side. Every team has a different mix of talents, a different perspective and different local needs to fulfill. What do they have in common? Their resulting Green Maps are all beautiful! With hundreds of Green Maps underway, we're seeing tremendous impacts on local communities on every continent. Each Mapmaker's contribution is both local and global: because GMS is designed to learn from those who use it, the Mapmakers are invaluable to the development of the movement and its methodology. The diverse approaches can be explored through the stories in Latin America and other places around the world on this website. The areas being charted range from cities to whole states, downtowns to bioregions, mega-cities to villages and even neighborhoods (primarily through our Youth Mapmaking program). Although it can take months or even years to publish, you can find successful examples of all of these on this website and at GreenMap.org. Each year, about 40 new communities respond to GMS's open invitation to lead a local Green Map project. Our directory of about 300 participating places in 45+ countries includes all locations that have officially registered, whether or not their project has completed a Green Map. Many of the Mapmakers are seeking more volunteers and support locally, so please contact them directly if you wish to help. Contact us if you want to initiate a new Green Map project, or need help connecting with an ongoing project. |
